Pre-scheme cameras

Prior to the existence of the Safety Camera Programme, the siting of cameras was determined by agreement between the local authority, trunk roads authority and the local police force. Cameras were introduced in Central Scotland in 1995, particularly to reduce collisions either at specific sites where there had been a number of collisions or as part of route action schemes. Central Scotland Safety Camera Partnership now operates these cameras within the scheme on the basis that a road safety benefit has been delivered.

Current rules for establishing new camera sites ensure that priority is given to locations or roads with a known collision and casualty history.
